Audio too has helped me consider what good dialogue really does accomplish.
To read is one thing, but to speak it requires a slightly different ear. And the breathing is quite different as well.
My conclusion, at least on historicals in audio, would be that the more focused the sentence, the more speakable it is, the more powerful it is.
Yet, true, we write initially for print. And to a certain extent, fantasy! Real life dialogue gives you more of...say THE SOPRANOS (in terms of power) than...GWTW, or (my all time unfavorite) MY DINNER WITH ANDRE.

Cerise,
Congrats on the new audio book! I listen to music on the treadmill and this sounds like a great way to keep me exercising!

I admit, I stopped listening to Delicious by Sherry Thomas because I couldn't keep it straight. But books with less complications are fine.

I a m fascinated by which books sound good on tape.
The longer books don't seem to work for me as well. Attention span? Too much information? Plot too complicated?
Who knows. But they jsut don't hang together as well.

I LOVE books on tape. Like Lisa, I have a good commute, and the books keep me sane. I loved Agnes and the Hitman, and the Charlaine Harris books especially. I like to "reread" on audio, too. Some books I'll never get back to, otherwise! Congratulations on the new release!

I'm not a "books on tape" person. I do have a one-way commute of 40 - 50 minutes each day, but that's my wind up and wind down time - I use music for that.

It drives my boss crazy because he only "reads" books on tape and he thinks I am wasting my time by not listening on the way to and from work. I asked him if he would rather have me calm or crazy when I'm at the office and since he is the crazy one of our team, he wisely chose for me to be calm and just grumbles under his breath when I refuse his offer of a great book on tape.
