The More the Merrier

By Juniper Bell

During a recent author-reader chat, I asked the question, “When it comes to M/F/M stories, how many M’s are okay?” My favorite answer: “You can’t have too many M’s.” I loved that! My last book, MY THREE LORDS, featured three handsome noblemen, and my newest Ellora’s Cave release, GO WILD, stars four sexy, rugged Alaska men.

Not that I’m trying to one-up myself—the story just worked out that way.

But it did make me wonder, what is it about an “extended ménage” that’s such an appealing fantasy? (I should add that not everyone finds that fantasy as attractive as I do.) I’ve thought of a couple theories.

1. Ménage a trois stories often involve a three-way relationship, with all the complicated dynamics that come with it. An extended ménage—hey, that’s just sex, pure and simple. Attempting a full-on relationship with four men—yikes! In GO WILD, Lars and Katia are contemplating marriage. They have a strong emotional two-way relationship. The other men are extras in their story. The ménage encounter is about pleasure and freedom, not emotional entanglement.

2. The more M’s, the more clear that it’s a fantasy. Statistics are hard to find, but an ABC News sex survey says 14% of adults have tried a threesome. An Australian study says that threesomes are by far the most common form of group sex, although some respondents say they’ve had up to five partners. So sex with two men is within the realm of possibility, but once you start adding more M’s, it becomes more unlikely—for most people.

3. Women (speaking generally, of course) love to be adored. There’s a part of us that wants to be treated like a goddess. We want to be seen as beautiful, irresistible sex divas. Because that’s what we are! All of us. But we generally keep that side of ourselves confined within a relationship. When you dive into an extended ménage story, you can let that side loose. You can imagine being the object of lust of any number of men – without harming your own personal relationship. Talk about safe sex!

4. It’s crazy, forbidden, rule-breaking behavior – exactly the kind of thing it’s fun to read about!

So what about you? Do you enjoy extended ménage stories, and if so, why? Is there a reason I haven’t thought of? I’d love to hear your comments! Leave one, and I’ll enter you into a drawing for a download of GO WILD.

Lars loves Katia. Katia loves Lars. Lars wants to marry Katia. Can he convince his free-spirited lover that marriage will be as fun as her sexually adventurous single days?

Never before has Katia been tempted to give up her carefree ways. She’s deeply in love with Lars, but she doesn’t know if he can handle her wild side—or wilder needs. But Lars is a hard man to resist. The former Olympic champion won’t give up, not when he knows just how to please her.

The people of Wild, Alaska, know the best way to survive winter is to let off a little steam. When his buddies hit town for Wild Nights, a notorious winter festival with one rule—“anything goes, nothing counts”—Lars has the perfect opportunity to prove he’s the man for Katia.

Lucky for Katia, “proof” includes four rugged Alaska men and one wildly erotic night.

Reader Advisory: Features an extended ménage (M/F/M/M/M) and references to bondage experimentation and sexual escapades of all types. Woohoo!

“If anyone treats her wrong, they’ll answer to me,” said Lars, still behind her. He gave her a little spank on the ass. Katia felt her flesh tremble and her nipples perk up— more. A warm, melting feeling spread through her. The feeling of an adventure about to begin.

Lars took Katia’s arms and held them behind her. Her mouth fell open in astonishment. He drew her up on the tips of her toes so her back arched and her breasts protruded in blatant display. The three men appeared riveted by the sight of her naked body presented to them so invitingly.

Through her haze of surprise, she wondered what they saw. A slim, taut, pale body, long dark hair, erotically aroused nipples. A shadowed triangle between her legs.

“This woman,” Lars said in a husky voice, “has been making me crazy since the moment I met her. She’s the most sensual, most passionate, most lovable wild thing you’d ever want to meet. And she has the idea that I’m a straight arrow who can’t handle her free-spirited ways.”

For the first time, Eagle made a sound, something between a snort and a cough.

“I thought you’d say that,” said Lars. “And it’s true, since I met Katia I’ve been more of a stay-at-home type. It’s only normal. We had to cement our relationship, right, love?”

“What’s going on, Lars?” she whispered, turning her head against his chest.

“You. Me. Three naked men. A sauna. Whatever you want.”

She turned her head back toward the men, who were studying her body with complete and thorough attention. The tension in the room went up another three notches.

“I told you before I trust these guys with my life. When you’re out in the back country you have to rely on each other. We got stuck a few times and had to figure our way back.”

He ran his hand up the side of her breast. “If it suits you, we’ll keep going. If it doesn’t, we’ll stop.”

She shivered as her nipple hardened further. Between Jake’s strong legs, she spotted an answering rise. “Why are you doing this?”

Lars bent his mouth to her ear. “Because I love you. Every bit of you, you wild thing. And I want to prove it. ”

Katia’s body pulsed with excitement. How long had it been since she’d had a sexual adventure like this? She’d forgotten the adrenaline rush of the wild unknown. The thrill that reached deep inside her and made her feel like a goddess.

And to have Lars participate, no, even more…to have him take charge of her like this…what an unexpected miracle.

Well, girlfriend, you know I’ll read anything you write, one man or twenty! The “sex goddess” reason is a good one– what woman doesn’t want multiple men begging at her feet? Even if it’s just within the pages of a book 😉 I love the set up you shared here though– the idea that Lars is doing this because he cares about her and wants to show her he accepts all of her… *sigh*

I think the menage fantasy typically stays a fantasy for most because the chances of finding 3 (much less more) people that can coordinate the sex so that everyone is satisfied and no one is left feeling like a third wheel would be difficult. In real life. Apparently its not impossible just based on the stats you quoted. I wonder how many of those that tried it have managed to make a life out of it? Personally, I love to read a well written menage, the more Ms the better if the author can account for all the body parts, LOL. Go Wild sounds terrific and mostly because of the established and strong connection between Lars and Katia. Can’t wait to read it!! 😀

I do like the menage stories. I haven’t read many with the extended menage, though.

I like to read them because it’s not something that most people would accept. It’s like a fantasy, but just out of your reach. Like getting a peak at the forbidden.

The statistics are interesting. Wonder how many people wont admit to having had an experience like that?

There are probably a lot more people interested in having a menage a trois than anyone would realize. Thankfully, authors like you help bring the fantasy to life, even if we’re just reading it.

I haven’t read any extended ones because in my mind that’s just too much for one woman to handle. I like the menage genre but I’m more than willing to read Go Wild. They are committed couple and Lars is willing to proof to Katia that he is the man for her. When a menage is a menage for just the sex, that completely turns me off. I can read that anytime. What I want is a menage that has meaning and will continue to have meaning over the night/day is over. If its only a couple experimenting, that’s fine, too, as long as it has been establish from the beginning of the book.

Make sense or am I just talking to talk?

    🙂

I like to read menage because it is total fantasy. Yes, I have known a couple of people who have told me they have tried them. Both were 2 women and one man. I do think that it can work as a relationship but it would take people who are very open minded and very honest.

I love to read menages stories the most I’ve read has been with four men and it was hot. I love the fantasy of a menage but I couldn’t imagine every being in one myself though. The cover is beautiful.

Thanks for all the great comments!

Erin, love ya, you sex goddess you! Then again, aren’t we all? LOL. And we deserve to be treated as such. 😉

Stormy, I completely agree with you about the body part coordination. Quite a challenge to write, let alone try to pull it off in real life. I’ll keep it in the fantasy realm, thank you very much.

Lanae, I found other statistics that say menages are a very common fantasy — much more common as a fantasy than as a reality. I’m a big believer in fantasy — love to write it, love to read it.

Marika, you make a very good point. I liked the idea of the menage not being just for the sex, but actually bringing the main characters closer together. Thanks for your comment!

Jen B. – I agree that a three-way relationship would be challenging. I’ve heard of people making it work, but it definitely takes a lot of openmindedness and communication. I don’t think I’d be cut out for it. 😉

Diane – Thanks for your comment! It’s a hot, steamy read — perfect for a winter night! LOL

Sherry – Right there with you. The fantasy is fun, let’s leave it at that, LOL. And I’m glad you like the cover! Valerie Tibbs is the artist, and she did a beautiful job.

Hi, Juniper! While reading menage can be very fun for the reasons you mentioned, I do admit that extreme menage I read less often because I get easily confused–it’s hard for me to keep track of who’s where and what 😉 And it’s very much more of a fantasy thing, so it works slightly better for me when there’s more in the setting that’s also fantastical 🙂 I’m sure yours is amazing–looking forward to picking it up!
