Jodi Vaughn: Why Paranormal Romance?
Friday, October 31st, 2014

When people ask what kind of romance I write, I get a little nervous. And when I tell them I write paranormal romance, they always get that look on their face. You know, like I said I sacrifice kittens under the moonlight or something. I then proceed to explain what paranormal romance is all about. I know the next question that will follow. Why do you write paranormal romance?

There are a lot of reasons. I love reading it. I love how I can be transported to a different world where my imagination runs free. I also love how my paranormal characters feel so deeply and will go through hell (sometimes literally) for the one they love. Humans aren’t like. But more importantly, I love how my characters are given these super human strengths and powers that make them on a level playing field for all things evil. The world we live in isn’t always fair, but in my world of paranormal, I can even the odds and the hero always comes out on top in a very big and dramatic way. Plus I like kick-ass heroes/heroines. 🙂

Why do you like paranormal romances?

Hey Jodi, even my family & friends gives me the same look. I think my mom is one of the few of my f&f that have actually read my book because the others “just don’t read that stuff”. Come on, if you can read a self-help book and think you can make a million dollars, then surely you can believe in vampires for a couple of hours. LOL.

I like paranormal romances for the same reason I like sci-fi settings. It’s different. It stretches the imagination, it’s not “the norm”. Paranormal and fantasy touch on that possibility we all grew up with. Wondering as a child if there was something there, just out of reach, that you can’t quite put your finger on. But in a paranormal book, it becomes real.

I grew up with the belief in supernatural. The paranormal books are fun to read and get lost in. I learned to read with sfi stories. Still read them.

Hey, girl! I read and write paranormal because I want to believe. Angels are as close to paranormal as you can get! I started with ghosts and moved to reincarnation and now….

As Mulder (and Mary in the previous post) says: “I want to believe.” Same reason I like sci fi and fantasy – I’m always hoping that if we could just find the right words or the right equation or the right portal, we would discover worlds beyond our comprehension.

I like paranormal romances and urban fantasy because the characters aren’t limited to the mundane world. They have a unique take on the world and their problem solving skills. I’ve always been drawn to stories that involve werewolves, witches and a variety of otherworldly beings. Maybe it was all the “Creature Feature” stories I watched as a kid. 😀

I love paranormal books for a variety of reasons.I like that the author can create charectors that can do things that we in real life can only wish for, plus it sparks your imagination to think that there is more out there in the world that we know.In regular fiction books romance novels are great but just by their genre they have to be somewhat realistic, however in paranormal, the heroine always gets to have the greatest sex and a world we can only dream of.
