In the refuge…
Saturday, October 8th, 2011

I’m just posting a quick photo. There are several of us from the Diamond State Romance Authors RWA chapter who are attending the Ozark Writers Conference. We decided to skip the conference accomodations in favor of something more adventurous. We’re staying at the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. They take in large cats, mostly, from around the country who have been raised by stupid owners who thought having a tiger or lion in their back yard was a good idea.

These cats aren’t suitable for zoos, or for being rehabilitated for return to the wild, and a place like this is their last hope before extermination. We’re so impressed with what the refuge is doing, that our group is planning something to support their efforts—but more about that later.

I took tons of pictures and will share more once I get home. Here’s one for now.

Note: Check out Shayla Kersten’s blog today. She has more photos posted!

Kathleen! It’s a cabin, but the cabin looks like a tent. Very cool!

Red! Hey there, hon. For sure, we’re gonna make a trip up here together!

Wow! Love the picture. I was one of those stupid people with a lion, in the front yard–I was only a teenager, though, so I blame my father.

Loved Eb, but had nightmares for years after we moved to Texas and had to sell him.

Awesome. I volunteer at Wolf Haven, a sanctuary that does a similar service and provides a home for captive-bred wolves and wolf-dog hybrids (but without the BandB, darn it). Kudos to you for supporting a place like this, and count on my participation in any future fundraising venture you might plan!

That is beautiful! People are so stupid for trying to turn these animals into pets. It is good that there is now a safe, secure place for them to live.

Love the picture. Tigers are one of my favorite big cats. That seems like a neat place to stay at. I think that is a very nice thing that your group is going to do. I will have to try and support their efforts too.

Those tigers are so beautiful! I’m a big fan of animal rights and it’s sad when people don’t realise that they shouldn’t keep wild animals caged up at their homes for their own entertainment, treating them as pets. It is so great to know there are people out there working to help them.
