Happy 4th of July…Question!

fireworks-160971_1280

Yesterday, was exciting. My daughter showed up at our door with all her kids, soaked to the skin because she’d walked with them from across the road in a deluge.  The alarm for gas went off in her house. We dumped the kids, then went back across the road to see what we could do. We live in the country and 911 doesn’t respond to gas leaks here. I got, “Call the gas company.” We called the gas company and their lone emergency service guy said he was on his way (took him 45 minutes because, again, we live in the country). We turned off the propane at the tank. Then while she waited in the car farther down the driveway, I went to the house to check the appliances to make sure they were off and to open windows to reduce the fumes.

Since it was raining buckets, there was a huge mud puddle in front of her house that I chose to avoid. I, with my stubby short legs, attempted to step up onto the side of her porch, but my feet slipped and I began to fall forward. Kelly tells me I ran a few steps (trying to get my feet under me), started to go down and reached for one of the porch posts. I whirled outward, came around again, then momentum carried me out a second time, at which time my grip loosened and I flew, landing on my right side, face to hip in the mud.

No bones were broken. She thought I’d hit my head for sure I looked so confused. But nah. I have bruises this morning. My tendons inside my right elbow feel stretched (guess I’m not destined to be a pole dancer), besides some of my daughter’s first words to me after she stopped screaming were, “You looked like a really bad pole dancer, Mom.”

Anyway, I trudged back into the house and opened windows. The gas company guy finally arrived. He said she was damn lucky the house didn’t blow there was so much gas in the air. We found the problem. An uncapped gas spigot that a kid or an animal must have turned. A simple kick would have done it. Our dumb ass renovator failed to cap the line when we they put in our dry wall and we decided we no longer wanted the wall heater taking up space there.

So, since we didn’t have fireworks yesterday (Sorry. Bad joke!), we’ll be lighting fireworks with the kids in the yard tonight. We love setting up lawn chairs and blankets while the SIL plays with the explosives.

If you’re in the U.S., what are your 4th of July plans?

It’s my birthday, so I made a peach pie and a few other things for lunch and my parents and one of my nephews are coming over. We’ll play some cards and then they’ll go home and it will be just the pups and me. We tend to go to bed early, so we’ll see if we can stay up for fireworks tonight.

One daughter is in Vegas (working) and the other is nearby but also has to work tonight. Hubby won’t rise and shine until mid afternoon (damn retirement). I’m taking my kindle down to my sewing room. I’m going to work on a dinosaur quilt for my 31 year old daughter (yes, no typo) and start organizing my stuff for the quilt camp I’m going to Thursday. I have ribs marinating for dinner. I’m contemplating making potato salad to go with them.

We’re just hanging out today. I might get some chores out of the way, and definitely some writing. One big chore I’d like to check off my list is cleaning my office, but that would be an all-day project. I may just settle for clearing my desk. lol

Gonna be a quiet day here in East Texas. Kids are scattered with friends, suppose to rain and just too hot and humid to do much. But that’s ok. I love being at home and enjoying the quietness.

So glad your family is ok. Gas leaks are nothing to mess around with. And I do believe I’d be giving that contractor a call. He should know better.

And, I’m so glad you didn’t break anything. Bet you’re sore as heck this morning. 🙁

We had our traditional 4th of July brunch, and then we’re hoping to grill steaks for dinner, if it doesn’t suddenly pour down on us. Just enjoying a quiet day at home.

Lisa J! Happy Birthday! So why didn’t someone make that peach pie for you!? And thanks! I too a hydrocodeine this afternoon because my body was “all stove up”–that’s how we say it around here. But yes, we’re all fine!

Jeanne S.! You’re a cool mama. I’d love that dinosaur quilt too! 🙂

Elizabeth! I keep waiting for my daughter to recover so she can help me organize my office. It’s a disaster!

    Shirley! Hope the quiet lasted!

Linda! My dd’s dogs barked inside the house the whole time we lit firecrackers. We felt bad for them, but not bad enough to stop!

Masha! A day spent eating—now, that’s how I love to spend a holiday!

Pat! Would love to know who played!

I’m glad to hear your only fireworks are going to be the planned kind and that everyone is safe. I took the day easy as I’m recovering from a fall of my own. I watched A Capitol Fourth on the local PBS station and, of course, Independence Day. Other than that, it was just R & R: Rest and Reading.

My office is now less of a disaster, but I have actual clear, usable desk space now. lol I still need to do filing (lots of filing! OMG!), but I’m going to ignore that for now in favor of trying to clear boxes full of books out of my book room today. 😀

I love to bake and it’s just me at home, so I wait until someone else can help eat it. It was very yummy!
