Jennifer Kacey: Work Work Work (Contest)
Friday, September 15th, 2017

I have been working INSANE kinds of hours at my real job lately. HUGE tons of stuff going on and just not enough hours in the day to get it all done. Got me thinking about jobs in general. That we all have them. Some love them , some hate them, some have jobs because it’s a calling and others it is always nothing more than a means to an end. I get all of that depending on what day you ask me!

But I also absolutely love the people I work with. They are super duper amazing and I love coming to work to talk to them and get ALL THE THINGS done and well!

If you want to read about a group of men and women who love what they do and believe in it then you should try the Elite Warriors. Yummo! Elite Metal is where is all began……

For decades the US Marines funded a top-secret unit known as Elite Recon. A deadly group of men and women sent to infiltrate dozens of countries completely undetected. Mission objectives so extreme casualties were not only probable, but expected.

The current batch of operatives had returned from hundreds of assignments unscathed…until one mission went horribly wrong. Several men lost their lives and the group disbanded. The remaining leathernecks were scattered in the wind with new identities. They were told to blend in. Be normal.Or face being forever silencedjust like their fallen brothers.

Now, two years later, each living member of the group is kidnapped and given a chance to make things right. But this time they’re no longer under the thumb of Uncle Sam. A mysterious private backer who knows about their past has brought them back together. No longer are they forced to turn a blind eye to the lostand forsaken.

Duty is their salvation.

A new life. A new future…Elite Metal.

The worst job I ever had, was when I was 14. I went to work at the tomato sheds on Johns Island, SC. They put me on the conveyor belt, to sort tomatoes. There were 3 belts, one on top of the other. The belts had wheels running underneath it, with the tomatoes rolling by. You had to put the green ones on top, and the over ripe ones on the bottom. I lasted about 30 minutes. I got so dizzy that I got sick, and barely made it to the restroom.

Jennifer, This worst job I ever had is a toss up between Mcdonalds and Walmart…lol both had too many people (read customers) who thought it was all about them. Don’t get me wrong always be polite and as helpful as possible but don’t take crap from anyone. Example, crazy customer return, lady wanted to return over 600.00 in school supplies, got mad when I told her because of the amount I would need her receipt as it was company policy. I’ve never been called a bitch so much in my life. But I kept smiling, while in my head I had run her over with my car at lease a dozen times!!! I lasted at the Walmart for 2 years, Mcdonalds only 2 weeks fast food as a late 30 something was not any fun. Found a better paying ‘office’ job and got the heck outta there.

My favorite job was as a graphic artist designing packages…..now I’m a librarian, which I also love. I hated my jobs in retail! As a teenager I worked at a Chinese restaurant, loved that too!

I have loved all the jobs I’ve had. During college each summer I worked at a summer day camp which was basically like having gym all day with art twice a week and a movie afternoon. My first real job is one I still have as a massage therapist. I work for myself so I set my own hours and go based off of recommendations. It has its ups and downs economy wise so I decided to pick up an extra job. I trained and became an EMT/paramedic. My dad was one for over 20 years so that was kind of cool to follow in his footsteps there. I also got training as a nurse. I found a neat way to be a fill-in all over my area for both EMTs and nurses, so its not all that often but its great additional income and I love it. I’ve also worked as a nanny a few times mixed in there. That’s always fun.

However, there can be a downside to my 3 job life. Take last weekend for example. I spent all Friday and most of Saturday giving massages at a running event. As I was on my way home, I got called to fill in at an ER for a 12hr shift as a nurse. I got home Sunday afternoon and crashed for about 3 hrs before I got called for a 24hr shift as an EMT. Then there are other times I can go with only a few massages a week and no extra shifts.

Okay, I am confused. Do you want to hear about a job or an animal? 😀 Well, I will combine the two. The job, accounting clerk at a floor manufacturer. The job itself was not something to brag about. The company – in spite of being part of a conglomerate owned by one of the riches men in the world – was really one of the worst companies I have worked for. Having worked previously for a fortune 500 company, it was a real let down to work where the employee was nothing . . . My second year there I am all of a sudden being written up for . . . well I never did figure out exactly for what. I later came to the conclusion that were trying to get me to quit because they were going to be closing the plant and was trying to get out of paying so much unemployment. I wasn’t the only one being written up on bogus charges. Not a fun company. However, the people I worked with were really kind of neat. Don’t know how so many really great people managed to be working for such a lousy company. I still keep in touch with several of them. Anyway – how does and animal fit in? Being in accounting, my supervisor and I had offices at another site from the rest. We were in the back corner of a warehouse mostly by ourselves. However, my supervisor spent much of his time at the main office leaving me alone. I was okay with it, but it bothered him. So, with the excuse that she was digging up his yard, my boss started bringing his pit bull to work. Piper was the sweetest dog I have ever met. We got along just fine and my boss felt better leaving me with her. She was my “guard dog” – like I really needed one. But I did get a fiendish delight when sales reps stopped by and saw her. “Does she bite?” The automatic fear of a bit bull. Now I am not going to say that Piper wouldn’t bite, or even outright attack if she thought I was being attacked. But I found her to be a well mannered, sweet baby. I guess it is all about perspective. BTW, my boss who was so worried about me? He had just come home from Afghanistan having served there in the Special Forces. He had that Alpha protection thing going on. Like the heroes of the Elite Warriors. LOVED that series! 😀 He is also one of the “several” that I still keep in touch with. Sorry about the ramble. Thank you for asking.

The best, and practically the only, job I ever had was as an executive secretary to a bank president. I guess that sounds kind of stuffy but it really wasn’t. We live in a small town so I knew most everyone and got to help lots of people.

See, we made loans to people. Big loans, small loans, medium loans, we did it all. It was so great to be able to help a 16 yr old buy his first car (with his father co-signing). Or help a family send their oldest to college. Or help a business just starting out. But best of all, by far, was helping someone accomplish their dream of owning a home. It was so humbling to start out with a couple, help them thru the process, answer all their questions, then be there at the closing when the keys were handed to them for their very first home. Yes, there were tears sometimes but they were all happy tears.

Of course there was also the downside of having to turn someone down. Sometimes it was just impossible to make the numbers work. That was hard so my boss usually took those and I didn’t have to do it.

I’ve been retired for 5 years now and if I’m honest I have to admit that I do miss being able to help people. I run into my customers at the grocery store or WalMart or wherever and it’s always good to see them and catch up with their lives. But I wouldn’t trade retirement for anything. I loved my job, but I love retirement more. Gives me more time to read. 😆

My favorite job was teaching in San Diego City Schools years ago…retired now. My favorite animal is the dog…I have had three very wonderful poodle-mix dogs. A poodle pom who lived fifteen years, a schnauzer poodle mix who lived nineteen years eight months and a poodle who is a rescue dog I have had for eight years. I do not know his back history. Each one has been members of my family and keep me happy every day. I love my dogs.

I have liked all of the jobs I have done in my life. Most interesting was as a pretzel twister. However, some really interesting stories came out of working the admissions desk in the emergency room. However, my dream job that I have never had is an FBI profiler, think Criminal Minds 🙂

Worst job? Telephone solicitor for Olan Mills Portrait Studio selling their “Club Plan.” This was back in the dark ages (1973) when there were no auto-dialers, no touchtone phone, no computers, etc. We used calling sheets with phone numbers listed in numerical order and had rotary dial telephones. As much as I hated it I always made my quota and many people welcomed the calls because it was the only way you could get a deal on their professional portraits.

Best job? The one I retired from. I did desktop computer support via phone and remote control for a federal agency. I was able to work from home and worked with people all over the country.

Most interesting job in retirement? Preparing for and surviving hurricane Irma. 🙂
