I bought this brainstorming tool years ago at some writers’ conference. I’ve only used it here! “Story Cubes” is a brainstorming game. You roll the dice and whatever pictures appear, face-up, are the ones you use to riff off a story.

An alien crashed his ship which burst into fire. He used magic to transform into a human looked all around then decided to explore his new home.

Sitting on the field at the back of the farm was normally her favorite place until that night that she saw the shooting star. She jumped up because she was sure the field was on fire. When she got closer she realized there was an object on the field. Was it an airplane? No! The ship is round, like a clock. The hatch opens and an alien walks out! He waves his hand in her direction. She walks over to his ship and looks him in the eye. Then he asks for her compass? How does he know she has a compass?!

Time to get some fire under that alien so he can magical fly home on a jet plane.

With a flick of his wand, the stranger cast a spell on the plane, seeming to send it hurtling towards the falling star. Eyes wide, the captivated audience watched the seconds count down before, with the same quick movement, the magician reversed the plane’s course. Then he disappeared in a wild burst of flame, leaving the watchers in stunned silence.
