On Retreat, Sort Of…
Thursday, July 5th, 2012

For the next seven days, it’s going to be an adventure in babysitting…dogs and cats. My daughter’s to be exact.

While she’s off enjoying a family vacation in DC, I’m staying at her place to look after the critters. Did I mention she’s an animal activist and rescues dogs and cats in need of fostering? *sigh*

At the moment, I have four dogs and four cats to look after. All of them were either rescued from the pound’s death row or found beside a highway. One of the dogs, Millie, was a hit-and-run victim that dd took to the vet to treat her injuries. One of her hind legs was amputated. Not that missing a limb keeps her from doing anything.

Where does the retreat come in, you ask? I will have limited web access. Will be away from my land line phone. And checking my email’s a pain the ass, so I won’t be bouncing back to it constantly to see what’s up. Which means, I have time to write.

I wrapped one project yesterday and shipped it to my editor at Cleis Press. Now I have to put the final touches on my next Western for Samhain and ship the sucker! After that, I have days and days to do nothing by write (and walk dogs and clean litter boxes…).

Which brings me to today’s question. Do you have pets? How many and what species?

We have one dog and two cats. The two cats both came from our local shelter and we’ve had one of them for 13 years, and he was an adult when we got him. Our dog is a mini dachshund who is 7 1/2. They are all really spoiled!

No pets!! Not a one. In theory I think it might be nice to have a cat. In reality, I so do not want to plan my time around a kitty.

I’m embarrassed to say how many cats I have. We were happy with 4, but then Mama Kitty needed a good home before she ended up having more kittens. I brought her home and had her fixed and got attached. Then I rescued a newborn kitten, but it died and I was sad so my son and his girlfriend brought me a kitten hoping to cheer me up. Which is sweet, but 6 cats is a LOT. A. Lot. Oh, and a dog.

There is two dogs in this house. One female, Zoe, who thinks she is the boss and she will be 7 this year in October. She is a German Shepard mix but not sure what she is mixed with and her tail curls up like an O. She is 43 lbs and she has to have her peanut butter when my sister comes home or she will sit in front of me and back until i fill her toy kong up with it. The other is a male, Koda, will be 5 this year in August. He is a white German Shepard/ Husky mix and is white with some light shading on some of his fur. He weighs 75 lbs but he is a big baby when it comes to thunder. So talk about trying to write with him wanting to crawl in my lap this morning. He didn’t care for the fireworks either. They are both rescue dogs. Zoe we got her when she was 7 weeks old not long after our mom died and we needed something in our life. Koda we got him for just before Christmas when he was 4 months old because a the people that had him didn’t think he would get that big. Poor thing didn’t know what toys where or couldn’t go up the stairs. He was even underweight. He was starving the vet said. When I was first writing my kids book they got put into the book as familiars. So good luck with the pet sitting and get a lot of writing done.

Two dogs. My little girl is 35 lbs, 16 years old, and still in charge of everything. She thinks she’s a big dog.

My goofy boy is 85 lbs and 5 years old (although he acts like he’s 6 months). He believes I am a comfy chair/bed for him to rest upon. He and I often discuss that in “normal” homes the big dog does not throw his body across the mom to sleep. He dosen’t seem to care.

I have three dogs: Shelby, a sweet but stupid golden retriever; Dazzle, an awsome, very smart coton de tulear puppy; and Reba, who is going to be the world’s very best therapy dog. She charmed the socks off the people in the nursing home where my father is currently staying.

We have 2 Great Danes and a Dane/Boxer mix. We did a remodel on our house where we removed 6 walls to make a Great Room where the kitchen, dining room, living room, foyer, and first bedroom opened up as one room. We like to tell people we did it so the dogs have room to turn around! LOL! All of them are rescued. My newest is 126 pound, 22 month old boy. He’s my exercise partner. Because of him I’m up at 5:30 in the morning to go running. I hate to run! LOL! Love my big dogs!

We have a wonderful and slightly devious dog named Lola. We rescued her when she was one and I was trying to think of a name and the Kink’s song came to me…”Lola” and the rest is history. She is black and white and LOVES to chase small furry things, of all kinds.

My hubby and I have 2 horses, 4 dogs, and 5 cats. We got 1 dog when someone threw her over our fence and decided to keep her. We got two from a German shorthair/hound rescue group, and 1 my daughter found. Got 1 cat from the SPCA, 1 each from the city and county pounds. My hubby found the last two under a leaf in the back yard and ended up feeding with an eye dropper until they could take a bottle. They have made themselves at home now. Lots of work and yes, we have to have our daughter pet sit when we want to go anywhere overnight. lol

We have an orphaned kitten. the mommy cat died two days after she was born, so we bottle fed her, and now she is a part of the family. We named her Annie, after little orphan Annie. I call her Annie, or when she is wound up and attacking everything in site I call her crack kitty, LOL! 🙂

We have two dogs. Adopted from a man that was unable to keep them because of his fiance. (Lame excuse really) We’ve decided that Kobold (9yo) is a Huskadore, though we were told he was pure black lab we don’t think he is. Out other dog is Angel who is a Labrottie (10yo), Black Lab and Rottie.

The most animals I had at one time was 2 horses, 5 goats, 4 ducks, 2 sugar gliders, 2 hamsters, 5 cats, 15 dogs and a lot of chickens and a monkey.

But now I have 4 dogs, (One of the dogs a neighbor was going to kill when it was a puppy, so I took it, one of the other dogs I got from along the highway after it almost got hit by a car, then I almost got hit by a car to get it.) 1 cat ( I rescued and bottle feed when he was left by the mother at about 2 weeks old in my mom’s garage, I assume because he is deaf but he is now about 8 years old). Gotta love my animals!!!

We have 4 dogs, 1 very old Basset Hound and 3 Yorkie’s. Mom, dad and baby I love them very much. They are very spoiled. We also have 2 cats one the weighs about 20lbs. and thinks he is a dog. He hangs out with them sleeps on my lap with them and rubs all over them. The other is afraid of her own shadow and only comes out at night we call her the bedroom cat.

    So many treasured pets!

My daughter’s menagerie is a bit overwhelming for me. I love my betta fish, Titan, and my outdoor cat, Pumpkin. My mother has 3 Yorkies I can pet whenever I get the dog itch. 🙂

For the most part, I love independent creatures. Daughter’s 4 cats are wonderfully curious.
