Cinco de Mayo is celebrated even in my little southern town! It’s mostly restaurants putting up the banners, but this year, we also have a little pop-up fair! It’s only going to become a bigger deal as more Latinx folks move in, and I can’t wait for it! I used to live in San Antonio, Texas, and it’s HUGE there!
Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day (that’s September 16th). It celebrates Mexico’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla in 1862, which occurred on — May 5th! It wasn’t the final battle of their war with France, but it has significance because they won against a much larger, occupying force. That’s the history lesson, and when someone asks you what Cinco de Mayo is all about, you can tell them something other than “It’s a big party!”
So, are you planning to do anything to celebrate or enjoy the holiday? Maybe pick up some Mexican food to support the local businesses? Is it a big deal where you live?

This is what I miss in the cafeteria where I used to work–theme menus. I would be guaranteed to have some Tex-Mex food. There are no Mexican restaurants where I live, so I am not doing anything special. I am happy just seeing sunshine, blue skies and white clouds outside. Supposed to be near 70, but not much more than 48 degrees right now. Still a bite to the air, too.

It is our 44th Anniversary. But, our daughter and her family are coming to town today and our son is graduating from college (BSN!), so we are having a quiet evening at home.

I had planned to make a carnita dinner but got so busy in the garden that I lost track of time and didn’t get it together. Bummer.

There are probably things going on in the local bars or restaurants, but I’m not too much in the know. It’s another day I babysat my Grandson, took him & my Granddaughter to McDonald’s for their Happy Meals & made supper for the rest of us. Nothing special for us.
