MAKING A WRITERâS LIFE EASIER â REALLY?
I admire writers who produce novels while working a full-time job. I have no idea how they work their time management, but they clearly have a level of self-discipline I have never even dreamed is available to tap into. Then they come home to take care of little children, do homework, make dinner, put on a wash, participate in their marriage⌠and write a novel or two.
I do not work outside the home, but wear many hats from bookkeeping to overseeing a homeschool teen, to being a new grandma, to making jewelry, to providing astrology sessions. Iâve left out a few of my regular gigs but you get the idea.
I should be producing three times more finished books than I am. Although I donât believe we are all born equal, we each have just 24 hours in a day to do with as we choose. Iâm on a mission to find out what works for other authors when it comes to increasing productivity.
The latest story in my Sheikhs of the Golden Triangle series, The Sheikhâs Crowning, should be available on Amazon and other e-platforms right now. But it isnât, and wonât be for another six weeks. Itâs not the characters giving me a hard time, although Rick is a tough undercover agent who likes doing things his way, not mine. And Yasmine lets me write a scene and then tells me sheâs a widow, not a virgin. Or is it the other way around? I can take things like that in my stride. My problem is time management.
For months I saw incessant ads on television that made me drool for a particular voice activation software. There was this fellow, laboring at an ironing board with kids running circles around him, oblivious to everything as he dictated his hot romance into headphones. I was convinced that if I got hold of that incredible wizardâs tool that worked like a magic wand, I could pump out a book a week. Okay, maybe thatâs an exaggeration, but surely a book a month?
Lo and behold, my son called and told me I could get that very software discounted to half price, but only for twenty-four hours. So I punched in my credit card info as fast as my fingers would fly over the keys, and within about three days the coveted green and white box arrived.
My first go round with the software, I stayed up until 4am trying to teach it to recognize my accent. I am not from Transylvania, although I have a slightly unusual accent. I was ready to throw the thing across the room when it occurred to me that maybe the headphone that came with the software wasnât working. I plugged in my old headphones to see if that would work. It did. I went to bed, still bristling.
My laptop melted and I had to buy another. I uploaded the software onto the new one but have still â one year later â not successfully used it. When I whisper sweet nothings into the mic, my words and the words that show up on the page are galaxies apart.
Noise is a big factor. With a stay at home retired husband and homeschooled teen in a small house, there is only so much concentration time available. Iâve tried coffee shops and the library, but canât âget into itâ the same way with strangers surrounding me.
I donât recall having had quite such a problem when I wrote The Sheikhâs Spy, The Amulet, or Christmas Spirits, all novellas in the same series. I didnât use the magic software, either.
Back to The Sheikhâs Crowning⌠Rick and Yasmine are becoming impatient, as are my readers. They want their story written. Iâm even considering renting a room in a sleazy motel, and taking just my laptop and enough food and drink to survive a week of nothing but writing, editing and sleeping⌠no car outside the door for a joy ride!
Thatâs an extreme measure to take, so I hope youâll leave a comment and share some tips that work for you. If you use voice activation software, have you got a tip that might make using it feel like a natural thing to do? Is there a way to bribe it to actually display the words you said?
Please donât tell me to just put my butt in the chair and stay there. I am in the chair probably twelve hours a day⌠hence Iâve got a lot of butt to park in the chair! Much of that time is spent looking for promo for the books I have finished writing. Now thereâs a time suck⌠but thatâs another blog post for another day.
Enjoy the blue sky of summer, and Iâd be thrilled if you decide to read any of my spicy sheikh novellas while you take some time out to smell the roses⌠and chase dragons.
If you enjoy sizzling desert princes and passionate heroines in exotic settings, check out my website.

Deja Vu
How many times do you see something, meet someone, witness an event you feel you’ve done this before? Maybe you have in another life. Maybe you’ve seen or witnessed something similar. I find myself thinking of quotes from favorite poems, lines from movies or pictures from movies or stories or mental images of past experiences recurring in much of what I do or where I go.
While in Paris the week before last, touring Notre Dame Cathedral, I was Esmeralda from Hunchback of Notre Dame, crying out Sanctuary! At the Louvre, I was Molly Brown when she went to Europe studying all the paintings to get cultured Walking the streets of Paris I saw a vendor selling pink cotton candy and I was back in the pages of DEJA VOODOO with Molly B Boyette at the festival buying pink cotton candy. So much of our experiences in literature or movies repeats itself or has a close match and it’s fun to reference those times. It’s like coming home. I’m including (just because) some pictures from my trip to Paris. Notre Dame Cathedral, a photo of the Mona Lisa which doesn’t begin to describe how beautiful she is in person and a picture of the Sacre Coeur chapel on the only hill in Paris.

Leave a comment telling me about your Deja Vu moment for a chance to win
the prize package.

Well, today’s the day. I get to wait–impatiently—while readers get their first glimpse of Lost Souls. Of course, I can’t imagine there being anything more important than your reading this book! đ But hey, I understand if it takes you a day or two to let me know what you think. It’s also understandable that I’ll be here biting my nails, waiting to hear. I love this book. I love Cait and Sam. And my dream is that you will love the book well enough that you’ll tell others about it, so that they will be compelled to get their own copy of the book! Because when that happens, something magical happens—the publisher loves my book and wants more in the series, and there are so many places I want to take Sam and Cait.
If you haven’t already purchased a copy, read through the snippets I shared the past few days. This book has everything a paranormal fan could love—spooky happenings, suspense, a hero and heroine to root for and fall in love with, and magic. It’s releasing in trade paperback, eBook and in a MP3 version. The eBook version is a very reasonable $3.99. So what are you waiting for? CLICK ON THE COVER!

After you read it, I would greatly appreciate you leaving a review on Amazon to let other readers know about your experience. Readers like seeing what other folks have to say before making their buying decisions, so your opinion is important! You can make a difference! And if you would pass your experience along on Facebook or Twitter, I’d be forever grateful…

So you know Lost Souls has plenty of action and sexy goin’s on, but you probably want to know a little about the magic.
About that… I study a bit. Not sayin’ how much because that’s between me and the moon and trees, but I know some things. What I don’t do very well is create wonderful spells. Cait has the same shortcoming (how convenient is that, right?). Her partner even notes how long it takes her to write a not very good piece of poetry to accompany a very important spell in the book.
But for spells that have a history, that maybe belonged to her mother or Morin, sometimes, I have to pull in the big guns. In book one, I had help from Virginia E with “Mama’s Spell” in the opening scene. In the scene you’re about to read, IÂ fashioned the broom spell, but author Lacey Thorn helped me with cleansing/casting the circle. She’s really very good, and if I get much farther along in the series, I’m gonna tap her again (that somehow didn’t sound quite right but might be interesting too! ).
Enjoy another glimpse into Lost Souls—which releases tomorrow, folks!

Cait opened her belt and unzipped her jeans. âWhy does magic always require someone gettinâ naked?â
âNot always. Sometimes, da spirits like a little pomp. Den you wear a witchâs robes. But right now, gal, you have ta humble yourself.â
âIâm plenty humble.â
âYouâre plenty mouthy. Strip! You da one witâ da favor ta ask.â
Cait stripped off her tank top, toed off her boots, and shoved her pants down her legs.
Celeste gave her body a look, her gaze pointedly lingering on her bra and panties. âAinât got notâing I ainât seen before. Or dat Morin ainât touched.â
With her cheeks burning, Cait removed her underwear, shivering a little in the air wafting from a small fan set atop the psychicâs counter.
âStand in da circle.â
âWhich wayâs north?â
Celeste pointed, and Cait aligned her body to face that direction.
Celeste gathered short black candles from a shelf and placed one in each point of the pentagram. Then she placed the other items Cait would need in the north corner. She handed Cait a handmade broom made from the stiff silk of broomcorn and stepped back into a shadowy corner.
Remembering another time sheâd prepared a magic circle with her mama while standing in their kitchen along with a childâs spell sheâd written, Cait held the broom.
âSweep, sweep,â she whispered, brushing from the center of the circle.
âSweep away the dark. Brush away the bad.
With whisk and wish, I command thee.â Read the rest of this entry »

Just two days to go until Lost Souls releases. You know it’s spooky. I proved that yesterday. Betcha wanna know I deliver on the sexy too, right?
Here’s a little snippet. Something to tide you over. Once upon a time, Cait and Sam were married. They know each other well. So you’re wondering, will there be any surprises left? Huh. You have no faith! It only gets better!
Enjoy this little glimpse inside Lost Souls. It releases Tuesday!

Inside, the foyer was empty and dark. A step deeper into the apartment, he noted the kitchen and tiny living room were empty. He eyed the bedroom but sensed he wouldnât find her there either. These days, she couldnât sneak up behind him because heâd developed a sixth sense. Or maybe he was just reverting to a more primal version of himself, and he could scent her without realizing he did.
Right now, her soft, feminine musk was absent. Another familiar smell missing from the apartment was the sour odor of booze. Something he didnât take for granted, because Caitâs sobriety was still so fragile.
Pulling his iPhone from his pocket, he tapped the screen, found her number, and tapped again.
She picked up on the first ring. âHey.â
âYou still on stakeout?â he asked.
âFinished a little while ago,â she said, an edgy energy in her voice. âJust went by your apartment, but you werenât there.â
His eyebrows shot up. Cait never came by his place. He thought maybe she didnât want proof heâd managed to move on after their divorce. Which suited him fine. Last thing he wanted her to see was evidence he hadnât. âHow many times do I have to tell you itâs not a good idea to leave your key on the door frame?â
âOnly one ever used it was you.â
He grunted. âSo you always say.â
âIf youâre so worried about it, why not put it on your key ring?â
Sam paused. Not the grumpy response heâd expected. And her voice held a breathless note, like the question meant more than she wanted to let on.
He decided to ignore her suggestion, because the act would be another step toward a commitment he wasnât ready to make again. But he didnât tell her that. He didnât want to hurt her. âHow far away are you?â Read the rest of this entry »

What people said about Book 1,  Shattered Souls:
âSHATTERED SOULS shocked me with its exhilarating story line and its magical world of Witches, Wraiths and Demons. Ms. Devlin wrote an intriguing urban fantasy with just the right balance of romance, nail-biting scenes and well-developed characters. She really got me hooked from the beginning until the end.â ~
5 Feathers and Top Pick, Under The Covers
âAn intriguing paranormal tale that combines romantic suspense with a mesmerizing tale of otherworldly beings.â ~ Top Pick, Night Owl Reviews
âDelilah Devlin has created a fascinating world of magic and the mundane in SHATTERED SOULS⌠A terrific book, SHATTERED SOULS will leave you breathless for more.â ~ 4.5 Blue Ribbons, Romance Junkies
Fan favorite Delilah Devlin delivers her second paranormal romantic thriller featuring unforgettable heroine, Caitlyn OâConnell. This time, the psychic PI joins her police detective ex-husband to find a demon pulling women into the past to commit their murders in a seedy Memphis hotel.
Private Investigator Caitlyn OâConnell is tapped by Memphis PD to discover who has been using a Memphis hotel as his killing ground. Women are going missing, and their bodies are found inside the walls of the hotel. But the bodies themselves? They appear to have been murdered in the distant past. With ghosthunters and cops crawling all over the crime scene, Cait and her detective ex-husband Sam Pierce race to find the demon responsible before he kills again.
Darkness sank as murky as the sultry summer air, as heavy as a blanket pulled over a childâs head to hide the monsters lurking in a shadowy closet. Street lamps popped and sizzled, darkening then lightening, but failing to flare bright enough or long enough to chase away deep pockets of inky black. Cait was creeped out, since all she had were glimpses of silvery light from a full moon rimming buildings and casting deeper shadows to cloak alleyways and doorway stoops.
Another full moon. An event she was acutely aware encouraged monsters, both human and supernatural, to come out and play. Edgy and beyond bored, she almost wished for something out of the ordinary to happen, but then quickly changed her mind. The last time her job had given her a real challenge sheâd battled a demon in an attic while a wraith latched its freezing fingertips around the man sitting beside her, slapping him around like a rag doll.
For just a second, she relished that last memory. At least Jason had been awake.
For the umpteen thousandth time that night, Caitlyn OâConnell sighed. This time exaggerating the sound. Loudly. Actually, more of a groan than a sigh. A sound that invited Jason Crawford, lying back in the seat beside hers, to wake up and keep her company. She was bored as freaking shit. Surveillance was the one part of her job she truly hated. In fact, she thought she might like having her ingrown toenails cut better than sitting in a dark alley waiting for something to happen.
The weather irritated her even more. Although sheâd stripped down to a tank top and jeans, the insides of her boots were damp from the oppressive summer heat. Not a trace of a breeze stirred, and theyâd shut off the sedanâs engine to be able to hear vehicles approaching, so the AC sat silent.
What good was having magic if she couldnât even muster up a spell to start a breeze? Sheâd tried waving, punching, wiggling her nose, but nada. Worse, sheâd tried to come up with a poem to appease The Powers That Be, but hadnât found a line that sounded even remotely elegant with âwheezeâ tacked on the end.
She supposed sheâd used up her last favor asking for intervention with Worthenâs monstrosity, the Civil Warâera demon resurrected in his tomb, for which sheâd had to beg The Powers and a certain sorcerer for help defeating. Or perhaps they didnât like how sheâd ignored Morin since sheâd fought the demon and won. Whatever. She was a PI, not a witch. And right now, she had a job to do. Read the rest of this entry »

THE PERFECT GIFT
Thanks, Delilah. Since millions of blogs now exist, I found coming up with a topic for this blog a challenge. I wanted something to do with reading. Summers are often a bit more laid back and weâre often able to catch a few extra moments to read. Reading is a gift we give ourselves, right? Then I thought about sharing that gift with the love interest in our lives.  Somehow, somewhere, lightning struck.
Looking for the perfect gift for the love interest in your life?
Hereâs a suggestion that never fails:Â a romance novel you read together.
Whether the book is by one of your favorite authors or is a new author doesnât matter. What matters is setting the scene and reading the book aloud together.
Here are a few suggestions for creating the setting:
- Put any/all kids who are part of your life to bed before giving your love interest the book. (Some kids donât go to sleep right away so make sure theyâre down for the night).
- Choose a comfortable place (one you both like, one conducive to reading so the hot tub may not be the best first choice).
- Play mood music (preferably soft since you are going to read aloud).
- Turn the lights low. (Not so low you canât see the words on the printed page).
- Wear something that requires little effort to remove.
- Add a little perfume in strategic places.
- Tease out the presentation moment (âI have a gift guaranteed to blow you away.â âI bet youâll never guess what I want to do tonight.â âHereâs a fantasy Iâve had for a long time.â).
- Wrap the book provocatively. (How about inside a thong under the paper wrapping? How about with a sex toy on the paper wrapping? How a promissory note for a good time? How about a card you make with several suggestive ideas?).
- Pour a couple of glasses of wineâor your favorite libation.
- Snuggle up when each of you reads.
- Read with feeling. (One or the other of you may be better at this, but set the tone if you can).
- Read slowly . . . especially those scenes with sexual tension or explicit sex).
- Forget going to the bed. When the mood strikes you both, go with itâwherever you are.
- Continue reading throughout the week.
HINT #1: Ask your love interest for a date on a specific day/night and at an agreed-upon time. Agree to no interruptions (Unplug the telephone. Put the cell phones in another room. Turn off the TV. Shut the door to the computer room).
HINT #2:Â If a book you choose isnât working, find another one.
HINT #3:Â Have fun.
If youâre reading this and you know the âperfectâ book for the âperfectâ gift for a love interest, leave the title and author. Itâs impossible to have too many alternatives, right?
