Childhood Fears — and check out the open CONTESTS!
Friday, May 29th, 2020

“We kids feared many things in those days—werewolves, dentists, North Koreans, Sunday school–but they all paled in comparison with BRUSSELS SPROUTS.” ~ Dave Berry

So, I was looking for an inspirational quote to share today, but I found this one instead. Since it made me smile, I figured it was worth as much as any uplifting quote. And it got me thinking about what I feared when I was a kid…

Heights (still have that one), being called on in class (I got over that one because I was almost always smarter than the teacher–or so I thought), nuclear bombs (I did those “get under your desks” drills in school), being left behind at a rest stop by my parents (they did that one time with my little brother), or my parents being taken over by aliens. I never feared werewolves or vampires because I wanted to be turned into one; didn’t matter which.

So, how about you? What did you fear when you were a child?

And speaking of children, here’s the 6-year-old feeding goats. The goats were one of our stay-at-home projects. 🙂

I had a deathly fear of my grandmother’s cookoo clock. I also was terrified of staying in the bathtub when the plug was pulled because I was afraid of being sucked down the drain (my older sister told me that – yes, I was a gullible child).

I think I was less fearful as a kid, but I have always had the fear of falling… me and ladders are not friends.

I really don’t remember being afraid of much. Drowning was/is my biggest fear and it will be with me til the day I die. We didn’t go to the lake much but on the rare occasion we did, I stayed pretty much on land. Then when I was grown, married and had a 8/9 yr old child, we took her “tubing” on a nearby lake. Just watching her scared the crap out of me. Then she wanted me to get in the water with her, so I did. And even tho I had on a life jacket, when I went over the side of the boat and my feet couldn’t touch bottom………………I had a panic attack. Embarrassed the heck out of husband and daughter. Moral of the story is, they never took me with them again so I didn’t have to watch her.
And that 6 yr old? Beautiful, adorable sweetheart. Bet she’s even better when she really smiles. 🙂

What did I fear as a child? Falling! (Still have that irrational fear.) I have now issue with heights. No problem in following my brothers to the roof of the barn. No problem standing on the edge and looking at the huge mound of hay a few feet below. However, when they jumped off into that mound of hey, I turned around and climbed back down to the ground the same way I got up on the roof. I was also a tree climber. Loved to climb trees. But I did not jump out of them. I, again, climbed down the same way I went up. Silly, I know. But there it is.
