I bought this little brainstorming tool years ago at some writers’ conference. “Story Cubes” is (that looks wrong, but I promise it’s not) a brainstorming game. You roll the dice and whatever pictures appear face up are the ones you use to riff off a story.
Here’s the roll…
Do any of these symbols tell you anything? You can pick some or use all of them. Tell me a story, or just a glimmer of an idea, for a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card!
Psst! Look at yesterday’s blog, too, because there are many open contests! Enter while you still can!

An old man leaned on his cane in the airport terminal, anxiously waiting for his chance to board the plane to Scotland. He twirled the key to his luggage padlock in his hand while remember the days of his youth, most spent playing among the Scottish wildflowers and all the bees he’d had to dodge! He especially remembered the year hi Da had rolled the dice on the new fangled idea of electricity and they had indoor lights without the use of those stinky tallow candles. Ahhh, the good days, he thought. Jarred from his musings as an airline employee approached, he pocketed his key and accepted her elbow as she led him onto the plane…

Even though I’ve had to use a cane all of my life I take it one day at a time. I decided to change up my life so I took a chance and rolled the dice. Wow, would you look at that! It looks like a trip is in store for me. Now where to go? It needs to be spring wherever it is. There will be bees getting the pollen from the flowers. I decide to try Scotland as I would love to tour the castles that are there. I’m kinda of leary about flying that far, this will be my first trip on a plane and it’s so far away from everything that I know. I’ve always been alone, no one would ever want a cripple. I have loved Scotland since I arrived, it’s beautiful and the people are so friendly. I met someone that doesn’t seem to mind by bum leg. As we continue to get to know each other I discover he’s from the same state and within driving distance. When a light bulb goes off in my head I decide to take a chance and use the key to open the lock that I’ve placed on my heart so I will never get hurt. Please let me not be hurt again. I don’t think my heart will be able to recover.

She walked out of the castle to pick daisies. She walked a bit and found a huge garage with a lock on it. The key was on the ground. She picked it up and opened the door, Turning on the light, she found a small plane painted with many dice. As she stared a young man with a cane approached. She was surprised and said …..

For me these dice reveal a whole love story…. Each symbol represents a big moment in their life. Meeting by chance on a plan, thought to their wedding day in a castle, through to final moments of him leaning on his cane saying goodbye to his wife.
