UPDATE: The winner is…Claire Reed Warren!
If you’re anything like me, you have a stash of notebooks sitting in a drawer or on a shelf that you haven’t used and have probably forgotten that you even own. I get notebooks from family members because they know I hoard paper products and office supplies. I’ve never been able to pass by the $1 aisle at Target and not pick up some cute notebook. And yes, I do use some of them. Every purse I own has a notebook stashed inside for times when story ideas hit, but I still have sooooo many sitting around. The kids know this and hit me up for sketchbooks all the time. I love being their favorite “store”—but those requests don’t make a dent in my stash. The picture above is of notebooks I had stuffed into the bottom of my inbox tray!
So, I thought it might be fun to create a list of ways to use up my stash and give those lonely notebooks a purpose!
- 🎁 Birth dates and gift lists
- 🤶 Christmas lists
- 💻 Computer app passwords
- ✨ Happy thoughts and sayings
- ⚰️ List to help family sort your stuff when you die, also who gets what!
- 🖥️ Blog ideas
- 🛍️ Grocery/shopping lists
- 🎨 Craft/Art project ideas
- 📚 Story ideas
- 🗒️ To Do lists
Wow, that made me think. Now, I’m going to hit up my daughter for labels for my notebooks!

Journals of daily thoughts. Art doodles. I have a stash but I don’t use them. I gave up when I noticed I didn’t have the discipline to actually use them. I have some where I use a couple of pages and then nothing.
Ive made a vacation notebook
A concert bucket list
And I keep
One for Christmas cards who sent who I sent to and Christmas gifts.
Family stories & lists – cars that have owned by family members, jobs, vacations/travels, pets, best recipes
Makes me want to pick up some notebooks!
Lists of books and authors. I used to have a book filled with all the authors and books I read.
I keep lists
Plot ideas, list of character names and their bios for future novels,
I have start art journaling, watercolor whatever and around it daily I have a card pull, a motivational quote, a to do list, a gratitude list, a daily sketch from my day, and a section for pondering. That seems like a lot in writing! Another journal I started for experiments, like today I will complete a class for laughter yoga. My reason for the experiment and then a what happened after.
You could use them as journals or diaries.
My mother had a personal list of who got what when she died, as well as a will. Made it so much easier. It was a lovely touch too.
I have one I use to write all my reviews in & then I have a record of which I’ve done & the ones I still need to do. I also have one with lists of authors & their books by series, ones I have are marked off. That way I know which I still need. And I mark what I’ve read. Unfortunately, there are a few lists I’ve not got up to date. Just too many books keep coming.
Recipes, character names
i use one to keep track of the colors i have for crossstitching
one to keep the ist of manga i have
Since you are creative, you could give them as gifts to family and friends, by personalizing the covers … shells, keys, fabric, jewels.. etc
Make a book for your grandkids or kids and
Give to them on 26th bday or graduation
Garden log! It’s time to start planning for next year!
My hubby and I both love office supplies (we are both retired-LOL). He uses notebooks for taking notes at the various meetings he attends for our mobile home park.
I thought I was the only one to stash notebooks. ;D I have one with quotes that I like or that touched me in some way from books or wherever. Of course, and I am kind of surprised you didn’t mention it, but I have several that I journal in. The grateful notebook. The Rant notebook. The why notebook. Sometimes it’s all in one, but I do have more than one. Then there is the diary notebook – appointments and/or things needed for said appointments. Kind of a hybrid to do list. Notebooks are handy for all kinds of things.
I used to keep one for budgeting and bill payment, but have pretty well switched to a spreadsheet now.
Bucket lists-to read, to visit, to wear
I don’t have a notebook stash. Never interested me.
So many great ideas for using up those myriad notebooks I’ve collected. I especially like the idea of using one for character names. I tend to jot down notes in weird places then forget what I’ve written. 🙂
