Health Update & a Word Search (Contest)
Tuesday, April 29th, 2025

So, yesterday, I met with my oncologist. My daughter came with me because I’m still muzzy-headed and forget things. I’ve been extremely fatigued since my surgery, and I nap a lot. I was worried about the surgeon’s recommendation that I do another three rounds of chemo and how that would affect my summer and recovery. I’ll admit to being a little depressed at the idea.

My oncologist made a face when I mentioned what the other doctor said and shook his head. He said, you did amazingly well with the chemo, and the surgeon got all the diseased organs he could find. Yes, there was still microscopic evidence of disease in the parts he removed, but immunotherapy should help keep anything lingering in my body in check. He wants instead to give my body a chance to fully recover from the chemo and surgery. He’ll order scans in a month or two to make sure the cancer doesn’t come back, but we can do immunotherapy for a while, continue to scan, and if necessary, at a later date, reconsider more chemo. In the meantime, my job is to get healthy and feel well. I was enormously relieved. I will do whatever he tells me I should because we’ve already accomplished so much. I trust him.

At the end of our appointment, he asked, “Do you want to do an immunotherapy session today and get that knocked out? I won’t have to see you again for another month.” So, I sat in the chair for an hour with an IV running and did that. Usually, immunotherapy doesn’t affect how I feel all that much, but today, I feel nauseous and tired. I’m run down. I’ll pay attention to how I feel, rest when I need to, make myself putter to get myself moving, but yay—I won’t be losing my hair again. Right now, it’s super short and mostly silver. I look like Judy Dench. My dd has been working on getting the pool ready for me. If she gets it pretty and blue, I should be swimming by mid-May. That will be a huge boost to my happiness.

Anyway, that’s the report. At some point, I might talk about things that were helpful to me during this journey that might be helpful to others. But right now, I have work to do and naps to take. I’m just so happy and relieved that I have more time with my family and time to be me. In May, I hope to return to my art guild meetings. We’re having a decoupage mini-workshop in May, and I want to be well enough to attend and participate. In the meantime, I’ll edit and paint and poke my head in the door here to say hello.

Summer is my favorite time of year, and yes, it all revolves around the pool. It gets hot as hell in Arkansas, but we enjoy our summers. We hit the pool, we barbecue, use the smoker and the blackstone beside the pool to cook wonderful meals. We have movie nights, including a few that we watch with an outdoor projector when the mosquitoes aren’t quite so bad. I love being outside to watch the chickens who escape their pen and peck around the yard. The goats and geese are fun to watch as well. We fill bird feeders and watch the variety that come to our property, along with the deer and foxes who come to our pond. Of course, there are trips to the flea markets. I can’t wait to have the kids home. Their noise—the music and laughter—really picks me up.

Happy Alfred Hitchcock Day! (Contest)
Wednesday, March 12th, 2025

UPDATE: The winner is…Diane Sallans!
*~*~*

Another obscure holiday to celebrate! I’m a huge fan of Alfred Hitchcock’s films. My favorites among his long list are in the puzzle. The first one I ever saw was The Birds when I was just a child, and it’s remained my favorite over the years. Tippi Hedren was so elegant and beautiful. Rod Taylor was a ruggedly handsome man. The story had a slow-building dread that holds up to this day.

Just the other night, I re-watched North by Northwest with Cary Grant. I loved this movie because he didn’t start out as a hero. He was handsome, loved the ladies, and didn’t take life very seriously, but circumstances, and a mysterious woman, had him stepping up. It was so much fun to watch!

My second favorite has to be Rear Window. The way it was filmed was so unique—the drama unfolding before the Jimmy Stewart’s eyes as he’s laid up with a cast. The tension again was a slow, steady build.

Hitchcock is one of two directors whose films I adore–the other being Christopher Nolan. I haven’t watched every Hitchcock film—there are so many! He had a TV show too, and I remember an episode where police were trying to find a woman’s missing husband, and she served them a lovely dinner with a very tasty meat… Yeah, that one stuck in my mind.

Anyway, today’s a day to celebrate a remarkable director, who never earned an Oscar, despite his huge, wonderful catalog of films. Maybe pick a Hitchcock movie and watch it tonight. I haven’t watched The Birds in a few years. I’m overdue.

For a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card, tell me what your favorite Hitchcock movie is! Enjoy the puzzle!

Word Search: First Signs of Spring (Contest)
Thursday, March 6th, 2025

UPDATE: The winner is…Theresa Privette!
*~*~*

The official start of spring is the 20th, but here in Central Arkansas, we already have signs of the changing seasons.

Yesterday, I noted that the forsythia and japonica bushes have started to bloom. We’ve had rain and tornadic activity around the state. Another sure sign. We’ve already had some mild flooding around the state. The temperature is still cool here, but we have forecasts for the upper 70s in our 10-day forecast. I expect budding trees to begin to show some blooms. We have redbuds and dogwoods in the forest around us. There’s been an increase in deer sightings, and I’m waiting to see the first fawns emerge.

For a chance to win a download of your choice from among my over 200 stories, tell me what the first signs of spring are for your area—and when you expect them to happen! Enjoy the puzzle!

Word Search: Hot Sauce Day (Contest)
Wednesday, January 22nd, 2025

UPDATE: The winner is…Janelle!
*~*~*

Today’s another obscure holiday–Hot Sauce Day! Since I’m a lover of hot sauces, I thought celebrating them would be fun.

Did you know that chili peppers originated in the Americas? They were spread around the world by Spanish and Portuguese traders. They get their heat from something called capsaicinoids. They’re rated, too, on something called the Scoville Scale. Reading the rating of some of the hot sauces I looked at, I’m a bit of a weenie with my favorite sauces (Cholula, Tabasco, and Frank’s) only rating in the 1000s. Tabasco is the hottest in my fridge at 7,000. Da Bomb, which I listed in the puzzle, is a scorching 119,000 to 1.5 million!

So, for a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card, tell me whether you’re a fan of hot sauces and which ones are in your fridge!

Word Puzzle — Ideas for Next Boys Behaving Badly Anthology (Contest)
Wednesday, January 8th, 2025

UPDATE: The winner is…Angela Carter!
*~*~*

So, the other day, I posted a poll to choose the next theme for another Boys Behaving Badly Anthology. The winner of the poll is “Burn”—a tentative title. I’m okay with that. So, authors start thinking about how you can use heat/burning/fire in a short story between 2500 to 5500 words. I’ll put together a Call for Submissions soon and make a formal announcement.

Ugh. My puzzle generator changed, and I don’t like change. I hope it works similarly to the old version. Since I’ve settled on a theme for the antho, I thought I might list some ideas authors might play with for their stories. For a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card, tell me which idea you love. If you have another idea to offer, I’m sure authors would love to see it!

Word Search: New Year’s Resolutions, Anyone?
Thursday, December 26th, 2024

UPDATE: The winner is…Beckie!
*~*~*

Christmas decorations are still up, but it’s time to make some plans for the New Year!

Is this something you like to do? Do you set resolutions? Plan to join Weight Watchers? Sign up for yoga classes at the local rec center? Set a budget to improve your finances? Maybe plan a trip or two?

Every year, always, I set plans in motion. Some goals I achieve, some I lose interest in working on by mid-January, but others, are a constant work in progress. I love the process of planning for a new year—and it always begins with my writing goals. Seeing as I abandoned writing in August due to my diagnosis, I’m a bit wary of setting goals too far in the future, and I have tons of self-doubt about whether I can ever achieve my former productivity, but I am going to set some goals anyway as something to shoot for. And I’ll go for pie-in-the-sky because I’m an optimist, and if I have to adjust later, ah well. I have to have goals and starting points to remain motivated.

So, for a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card, solve the puzzle to keep that gray matter functioning, then tell me whether you have any goals for the new year, big or small.Â
