   Alan had just passed the point in the road that he knew so well he could drive it in his sleep, the straightaway that was so rarely traversed he couldn’t recall the last time he’d seen another car or person on it, when Bernie gave a sharp bark. When he glanced in the rearview mirror, he saw a woman walking away from him, guitar case in hand, lace skirt swirling in the breeze around her worn cowboy boots.
